Best BJJ Gi: Which One Should You Buy?
There's no single "best" gi the right one depends on how you train. Here's how to match a gi to your actual use case, not just a review score.
If you've searched "best BJJ gi," you've probably noticed every list gives a different answer. That's because the best gi for a competitor training in a hot gym is a bad fit for a beginner who wants something durable and cheap. Instead of one winner, here's the right pick for five common situations plus what actually separates a good gi from a bad one, so you can judge any gi on your own.

What to actually look for in a BJJ gi
- GSMGrams per square meter. 450+ means more durability; under 400 runs cooler and dries faster but wears out sooner. Full GSM breakdown →
- WeavePearl weave balances durability and weight the standard choice. Single/gold weave is heavier and more rigid.
- Pre-shrunkA pre-shrunk gi should fit true-to-size after washing. A non-pre-shrunk gi needs to be sized up and shrunk on purpose.
- IBJJF legalIf you compete, check collar thickness, cut, and patch placement rules before you buy.
- FitToo loose gives opponents more fabric to grip; too tight restricts movement. Check the size chart, not just your usual size.
Frequently asked questions
What GSM gi is best for competition?
Most competitors use a 350–450 GSM pearl weave gi light enough to move fast, heavy enough to stay IBJJF-legal and durable through a tournament day.
What's the most durable BJJ gi?
Heavier GSM gis (500+) in a gold or single weave generally last the longest, though they're heavier to train in. Read the full durability guide →
Do I need a different gi for competition vs. training?
Not strictly, but many practitioners keep a lighter, cleaner gi for competition and a heavier one for daily rolling, since training gis take more wear.
How much should a good BJJ gi cost?
Expect $70–$130 for a solid gi from a direct brand. Premium competition weaves can run higher; budget or beginner gis can run lower.
