The Ultimate Guide to What to Wear Under Your BJJ Gi

Introduction – Why Choosing the Right Gear Matters

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is an intense and physically demanding martial art that requires practitioners to wear the right gear for comfort, flexibility, and performance. While the focus is often on choosing the perfect gi, what you wear underneath is equally important. Many practitioners wonder whether they should wear shorts, compression gear, or rash guards under their gi and which options provide the best experience during training.

Bravo BJJ is offering Custom BJJ shorts in different colors and styles. These high-quality shorts are designed for durability, flexibility, and breathability, ensuring that every practitioner feels comfortable during intense rolling sessions.

This guide will explore the best options for under-gi wear, answer common questions, and help you choose the right gear for your needs.

Rash Guards vs. T-Shirts – Why Rash Guards Are Preferred?

A common debate in BJJ is whether to wear a rash guard or a regular T-shirt under the gi.

While some beginners opt for a cotton T-shirt, it is generally not recommended. Cotton shirts absorb sweat, become heavy, and restrict movement, while rash guards are designed to wick away moisture and provide better flexibility.

Why Rash Guards Are the Better Option:

• Prevents Gi Burn – The friction from a gi can cause rashes on the skin, and a rash guard helps reduce irritation.

• Moisture Control – Rash guards wick away sweat, keeping the body dry and cool.

• Better Mobility – The stretchy material allows for full range of motion during training.

Wearing a rash guard under the gi is widely accepted and even required in some gyms for hygiene and safety reasons.

What Type of Shorts to Wear Under a BJJ Gi?

For those who prefer to wear shorts under their gi, choosing the right type is important. There are several options available, and each has its own advantages.

Best Shorts to Wear Under a BJJ Gi

1. Compression Shorts – These are tight-fitting, flexible, and help wick away sweat. They also reduce the risk of skin irritation from the gi fabric.

2. Board Shorts – These are commonly used in no-gi training but can also be worn under a gi. They provide a looser fit but may bunch up during training.

3. Hybrid Shorts – These combine compression shorts with the durability of board shorts, offering a balance of comfort and flexibility.

• Rash guards help prevent skin irritation from gi fabric.
